Waste Knights: Second Edition is a post-apocalyptic game of survival and adventure set in dystopian Australia half a century from now. It is a 1-4 player experience allowing you to play cooperatively, competitively or in solo mode depending on the adventure you choose. The game is inspired by cult movies and books of the genre enabling players to immerse themselves in a ruined world full of gangs, mutated creatures, sentient machines and – most of all – unforgettable stories.

When you sit at the table, you become one of rugged heroes of the ruined continent, facing innumerable challenges in their journey through the wasted Australian outback. Depending on the adventure you play, you will have to make narrative choices, overcome obstacles, fight unique, fearsome enemies presented on beautifully illustrated cards and roleplay your knight whenever you encounter various events and denizens of this destroyed land.

The game is story-oriented, with each adventure branching out into different plots full of unique rules, goals and associated tales. You will make lots of decisions – from huge ones affecting the world around you and the course of the adventure to seemingly irrelevant, pertaining to your knight. However, no matter what you do, you can be sure that each and every choice you make will have some impact on the game – favors will be returned, wrongs avenged, friends and enemies made for life.

Easy-to-learn rules combined with a unique narrative setup enable you to quickly start the game and plunge head-first into action. At the same time, each adventure comprised of different plots offers custom game mechanics to enhance your gameplay and provide you with lots of strategic options. Hundreds of entries – or story snippets – guarantee replayability and create a rich setting for your exploits. Additionally, when you start the game you will have no idea where the story will lead you and whether your today’s allies will not become rivals tomorrow.

The game is set in dystopian Australia based on grim visions of an economic crisis, machinations of powerful corporations, natural disasters, and disintegration of the modern society. On one hand, you can feel inspirations from cult post-apocalyptic movies and books, such as Mad Max, Waterworld, The Postman, or Stephen King’s The Dark Tower.  On the other hand, it is a very original approach to the genre, with a strong base in Australian culture and geography. You can be sure that you will enjoy hours of gameplay and exploration of this wild continent.

You play rugged survivors with rich personal background who excel at different skills – combat, exploration, negotiation, repair etc. They have various strengths and weaknesses and it is up to you to approach any challenge with this in mind. Additionally, each knight has their own unique deck of upgrade cards obtained as you gain Experience Points. You may use them to create a “path of development” that best suits your playing style.

At many points in the game – when embarking upon a journey, resolving plots, encountering cards or facing enemies – you are given lots of choices, both narrative or strategic ones. All of them have a direct impact on the flow of the story, which means that the same adventure can be played many times and you will never learn everything… unless you play again. And again.

The Guide containing story introductions and plot sheets features different types of adventures: full co-op, purely competitive or mixing the best of both worlds, with plot twists turning players into enemies or friends depending on their choices in the game. Some adventures are more strategic, other focus on action and exploration, but each and every one of them has a distinct feel and theme.  If you add to this the Solo Mode, you can enjoy desolate Australia for hours.

The Book of Tales is comprised of hundreds of entries containing unique tales from wasted Australia. Written by professional authors and designed by people who have turned board games and post-apocalypse into their way of life, it offers hundreds of pages of narrative. Add to this a plethora of great illustrations depicting the ruined world and its inhabitants and you can be sure that your adventures will be both thrilling and memorable.

Basic rules are really simple, allowing you to learn the game in no time and set it up really quickly, smartly balancing gameplay elements and immersive narrative. At the same time each plot features a set of custom rules thus adding new strategic layers of game mechanics.

Description:

Waste Knights: Second Edition is a post-apocalyptic game of adventure and survival for 1-4 players inspired by cult classics of the post-apo movies and set in dystopian Australia destroyed by experiments of a powerful corporation. Each player becomes a rugged hero, travelling through the wasteland, facing unnatural weather and enemies forged in long-forgotten laboratories as well as experiencing adventures full of dramatic choices and disturbing characters.

The game is adventure-based, with each Adventure branching out into a number of Plots revealed depending on the players’ narrative choices. Each plot offers unique game mechanics and stories that can be found in the Book of Tales – some of them are keyed to a particular adventure, some are generic, but all enable the players to immerse themselves in the setting and make decisions that change the world around them.

Each knight (player) has 2 actions at their disposal, which basically enable them to travel around the continent in their Vehicle, explore the area for ever-dwindling Resources (Fuel, Ammo, Meds), or camp in order to repair their Gear and heal Wounds or Radiation. Each adventure additionally offers a number of unique Plot Actions that let the players affect the story and fulfill their goals.

As the players move around the huge, 6-panel board depicting ruined Australia, they fight various Enemies, try to survive hardships of the unforgiving land, discover mysterious places and resolve narrative Encounters with many branching options to follow. Successes on any field bring them Experience Points needed to upgrade their knight using a unique deck of special abilities or skills. At the same time they should avoid suffering Wounds, Radiation or Damage to their vehicle, or else they will end up with permanent Injuries or Malfunctions.

Combat utilizing custom dice is both quick and brutal, so each enemy encountered on the road forces players to consider their options: what weapon to use, which resources to spend, how to best utilize their gear cards or special abilities. Adopting an efficient strategy when facing a particular opponent means life or death in the Australian badlands.

However, the heart of the game are stories. Each playthrough is based on an adventure found in the Guide. Some of them are co-op, others competitive, others still may end with the players grouping around different factions and forced to fight their former friends. The construction of each adventure offers lots of narrative choices guaranteeing high replayability and encompasses unique setup elements so that the basic game can be prepared quickly and the players can focus on the plot, not the rules.
